How to install illuminated house numbers

Luxello illuminated house numbers use 8–12V AC or DC low voltage — safe to handle and straightforward to install. A qualified electrician is only needed for the mains connection, or bypass mains entirely with a solar system.

What you will need

Luxello illuminated house numbers operate on 8–12V AC or DC low voltage — not mains voltage. This makes the installation safe to handle and suitable for competent DIY on the low voltage side. The only step that requires a qualified electrician is connecting the LED driver to the 230V mains supply.

Step-by-step installation

Mark the mounting position

Hold the number against the wall at the desired position. Mark the mounting hole locations with a pencil. Use a spirit level to ensure the number sits straight. For multiple digits, use card cut to the width of one number to keep spacing consistent.

Drill mounting and cable holes

Drill mounting holes using a masonry bit for brick or render, or a wood bit for timber cladding. Drill a separate hole for the cable entry, positioned so it will be concealed behind the number once mounted. Feed the 12V cable through from inside the wall or from the surface.

Fix the number to the wall

Insert rawlplugs into masonry holes. Pass the low voltage cable through the rear of the number. Fix to the wall with the supplied screws. Apply a small bead of clear silicone sealant around the cable entry point to prevent moisture ingress.

Connect to the LED driver

Connect the 12V cable from the number to the output terminals of the LED driver. Luxello numbers have no polarity — the wires are interchangeable. A single power supply can illuminate up to 6 numbers. House the driver in a weatherproof enclosure if installed externally.

Connect the driver to your power source

Connect the driver's 230V mains input to a fused spur or outdoor socket — this step requires a qualified electrician. Alternatively, connect directly to a 12V solar power system, bypassing mains entirely. A dusk-to-dawn photocell can be installed on the switch to automate night-time illumination.

Test the installation

Switch on and confirm the number illuminates evenly. Luxello numbers use concealed LED strips which produce a consistent, even halo-glow across the full face. If illumination is uneven, check all 12V cable connections.

A dusk-to-dawn light sensor (such as a Lutron photocell switch) can be installed on the power supply to turn the numbers on automatically at night and off at dawn — reducing energy consumption and extending LED lifespan. Frequently asked questions

Installing illuminated house numbers involves: (1) mounting the number to the wall and routing a 12V cable through behind it; (2) connecting the cable to a 12V LED driver in a protected location; (3) connecting the driver to a mains fused spur via an electrician, or to a 12V solar system with no electrician needed. The 12V low voltage side of the installation is safe for competent DIY.
